“Tolls for bridges, tolls to enter the town, what'll be next, a toll to use the facilities?” Kreemon muttered.
“Animals are permitted on the main roads only. We try to keep the town clean,” the guard said as they passed the gateway.
Each lantern in the town shone as a streaked globe through the fog, barely providing enough light to walk by. The first hazy building they saw gave itself away as an inn by its height and shape, and the amount of light emanating from a particular room.
“Looks like an inn,” Kreemon said, voicing the obvious thought of all those around him. “It's dark and foggy. Why do we not take a room or two here tonight. If in the light of day it is not to our liking we can find better accommodations when we can see.”

They tied up the horses and mules outside the inn, and entered.
The entrance of the inn led to a crowded room. Beer, ale and mead made their way rapidly around the room in the hands of the barmaids. The room smelled sweet from spilled drinks and the fruity preparations on some tables. Conversation saturated the room.
A musician played a wooden flute in the corner, his legs bent protectively around a hat on the floor. A few patrons sat near him, but it seemed that no copper from their hands would ever reach his hat.
Various bits of conversation were carried on the notes of the flute to the travellers' ears.

they protected, especially considering the numerous gaps in the walls

Four roads met in a cross at the center of town. Along two of the
