“Oh, please eat first,” Lutont said when no one responded. “I think they can be held off that long.” He stood and walked to the fire, where a pot of the bland-smelling breakfast was steaming, and began spooning the stuff into bowls. He'd only filled two bowls, when the door resounded with a loud knocking. “I should have been quieter,” Lutont said, losing some of his humor. “Now they know we're awake. If none of you mind the knocking, we can eat breakfast first, but it might be best to get this done with now.”
Kreemon set a bowl in front of Bork and took one for himself. “They can wait,” he said, and sat down to eat.
“Very well,” Lutont said. As the knocking became more frequent and more insistent, and then rarer and more hesitant, the group ate their porridge. Lutont occasionally smiled or chuckled at something that no one could fathom, breaking his sterner and more serious character from the night before.
“Ready now?” Lutont asked when everyone was finished. “Good.” He opened the door to a tired-looking lot of villagers. Dawn was just beginning to brighten the sky, and their initial excitement had worn off. “Did you think I'd let them run off?” Lutont asked the crowd. “It was no use freezing yourselves.”
“We have to know, Lutont.” The crowd parted for a moment so the innkeeper could get through. “She's awake now.”
Lutont looked back into his house at his guests. “This won't take long.” He looked at Kreemon specifically. “And it won't do anything to your minds. Chances are, nothing at all will come of this, so the most you have to lose is time.”
Kreemon replied back, “What will be happening, exactly?”
Lutont turned around. “Just a moment,” he said to the crowd outside. While he closed the door, the innkeeper yelled “Lutont!”
“It's nothing to be worried about. Rielicca has powers similar to those of Maralorn. He knows when an act has been taken against a mind. She knows what acts a mind is capable of taking against others. She is very useful in this village, as she can tell young people what their power is and spare them the frightful realizations that older people like me had to go through. We can only hope she'll be with us for a few more years.”

“Lutont!” Everyone could hear Harran the innkeeper through his banging on the door. “Open up! We have a right to know!”
Lutont sighed. “Ready?” he asked his guests. Not waiting for an answer, he opened the door.
Harran nearly tumbled in. When he'd steadied himself, he glared at Lutont, then stepped aside. Behind him was a girl about fourteen years old. She looked emaciated, and her face and hands were spattered with large, irregular blotches of darker color. The rest of her body was covered in a thick coat that extended down to her feet. Standing behind her, with his hand on her shoulder, was a man who was most likely her father. She looked up at Lutont with tired, drooping eyes.
“Please come in out of the cold,” Lutont said. “No, not you,” he added to Harran, who had taken a step forward. “You can wait outside.” Lutont did compromise, however, by leaving the door open after the girl and her father had entered.

“Then he's Uyithlyaw.” The commotion died down, and Rielicca had to repeat her statement so that everyone could hear. Then the noise picked up again, but this time they seemed impressed rather than fearful. It was obvious that many were about to say something or other, or ask a question, but when Rielicca looked at the next guest, everyone was quiet.

The Sign is a three inch circle of copper with a large onyx in the center, obviously quite heavy, but, and Rielicca's eyes opened wide again. Harran mumbled from the door, “I knew we should have had Maralorn look at all of them.” Rielicca was at a loss for words, and she took a step towards the priestess to get a closer look. “I think she can do almost anything,” the girl said in awe, taking a step back. Then she squinted in surprise. “But she doesn't. She heals people, and can make fire, and knows whether others are good… There's more,” she said, looking at her father, who shook his head. By this point, not a sound came from outside the door, and Lutont was completely still.
Rielicca looked at Kreemon, and seemed to have trouble focusing her eyes. She fell into another coughing fit, and when she recovered, it took her a few seconds to find Kreemon. She squinted at him for quite some time before speaking. “This is an elusive magic,” she finally said. “I don't think he is who he is.”
Rielicca looked at Lutont, then at Harran, then at her father, all of whom were speechless and staring at one or another of Lutont's guests. “That's all,” Rielicca said. Somehow, her father regained his composure enough to help her out of the room. The crowd parted for them smoothly, as if its members didn't even know what they were doing.
Kreemon's scowl deepened but he was patient until the group left. Then he asked, “So what was that all about? 'Uyithlyaw', 'He isn't who he is'. What type of fell magics are going on here?”

Who is he? What is he capable of?”
Lutont answered with difficulty, as his mouth was still agape. Somehow, he calmed himself enough to give an intelligible answer, even though the rest of the villagers were still silent. Some of them looked worried.
“_She_ is the fortune-teller, and no one is completely sure what she's capable of. She was born here, but her power exceeds that of anyone in Osander River Village. And Kreemon Fangly, you should not take Rielicca so lightly. I believe some of the villagers are wondering, with the combined magic of the three of you, whether you will destroy this village and everything in it.”
Kreemon's face flushed red, though he kept his anger bottled up and managed to keep his strained voice level. “What magic? The priestess, yes, I understand. But the bookworm? Me?”
A look of fear crossed Kreemon's face, and he stepped forward to grip Lutont's shirt in a double fist. Kreemon lifted Lutont up onto his toes. “I told you not to be messing with my mind! Now you be casting magics upon me?! What have you done!”
Harran leapt into the room, but then seemed unsure as to what he should do. “I've done nothing,” Lutont said, trying to keep his voice clear, but unable to get out more than choked words. “I couldn't touch your mind if I wanted to.”

Kreemon let go of Lutont with a slight push. His face was a smooth red by now and his voice was low and menacing. “Maybe you all _do_ have something to worry about.” Kreemon looked over at the fireplace. “I think I had the right idea yesterday.”
Harran stepped right up to Kreemon, so the two of them were alone in the center of the room. “Magic or not, I won't have you doing anything to this town or anyone in it. I'll chase you out myself if I have to.” Two or three of the more daring villagers stepped up close, afraid for the innkeeper.

Kreemon looked puzzled. “You ensorcel me, play with my mind and only the Four knows what else, and you think I will smile about it?”

If you let yourself try and destroy this place, it puts you in much the same position as the Five Children when they were locked in their pointless struggles with one another. Kreemon replied automatically, as if by rote. “Everyone suffers the little Death.” Kreemon's eyebrows scrunched in as he spoke. He repeated the line a few times under his breath, the color fading from a flushed red to a healthy tan, then his words changed. “Yes, it makes sense. The Big Death is coming. That is what is needed here.” Kreemon's eyes lit up with understanding. “The villagers need to move to an area that is not tainted with such fell magics.
