Continuing was difficult at first. Ardith and Ziedon could only carry the townsman so far, and they had to stop every minute or so to rest. Brinn was not nearly tall enough to take a corner of the litter. Although Sahlman tried to help, it was obvious that his arm was causing him trouble, and after half an hour, he had to admit that he'd done all he could.

With Brinn strapped securely to his back, Sahlman climbed the rope. Occasionally Brinn would startle the warrior by jerking his head suddenly and mumbling, as if waking from a dream.

Sahlman heard the whistle. He looked up to the top of the large tree, and then at the townsman. Muttering, he quickly removed his kheffiya and desert robe, and stuffed them into his shoulder bag. His appearance would still be notable, but definitely not so much as it had been.

He checked and rechecked the map. He had seen all the landmarks encapsulated within that sloppy double circle on the map, so this hill, barely thirty feet high, had to be Rakbaven.

At times, Fovery had a pained look on his face that the others didn't notice. He was either upset, or, more likely, concentrating very hard on something.
 +Finally, the ritual was over. Arnell and his friends from the impossibly distant past were escorted back to the pyramid, and were left alone.
 +Things were different now. While their needs were taken care of, including everything Halaren asked for to aid in Corbyn'​s surprisingly slow recovery, they didn't have the same freedom as before. They only left briefly, and always under guard. The air in Brundash had changed. Magi hurried from one place to the next, always too focused to talk, and their numbers increased dramatically. What had been a calm village was now bustling with activity, and much of this was directed by Belazan rather than the High Mage, who was nowhere to be seen.
 +As the days turned into weeks, all they could do was talk, so they discussed Corbyn'​s visions and their current situation at length. Was there a way to escape? If so, should they take it, or would they then no longer be "​allied with the peninsula?"​
 +After eighteen days, Corbyn was back in full control of his faculties. Late that night, Fovery paid them a visit alone. He was dressed in dark clothing, not his usual Brundash attire. The staff he always carried was nowhere to be seen, and he wore a sturdy rucksack and soft-soled boots. He smiled, and said, "​it'​s time to go." They all had questions, but his demeanor suggested silence and stealth, and the group had already agreed to trust the High Mage. Besides, there was something extra that made them want to obey. "Sorry I had to do that. I couldn'​t take chances. Follow me."

"Your questions will be answered soon." He brought them down a short flight of stairs into a cozy and surprisingly dry room, given that it was below the water-level of the marsh. He lined up his thumbs and index fingers, making a diamond shape between them, and then spread his arms wide. With that gesture, the wall opened up and revealed a shimmering ellipse. All of the observers were surprised, but most of all Arnell -- from all he'd heard, there was only one way in or out of Brundash. How was it even possible to overcome the powerful magic of the portal on the hill? "Right this way," Fovery said. The others stepped through the portal, and were released from Fovery'​s spell.
 +They arrived in a hilly area where narrow footpaths passed between thorny brush. It was still night, and the smell of distant wood smoke was in the air. This was certainly not Brundash, and nor was it anywhere in Meheiral or Malaener.

For now, he would focus on what he could do, so he listened, and swung Lodestone around him to find North. That, at least, would be something.

He was grateful for the presence and aid of the large warrior, as the trip back from wherever his mind had traveled during that night in the tower had been an arduous one. The priority had been restoring and re-organizing his mental library which had emerged from the process a bit scattered -- a state he was unused to and that had made him uncomfortable. The process was well underway now at least, if not complete, as the days of thought-exercises and meditation had helped restore what was at least a tolerable degree of mental acuity and clarity. Perhaps it was a mistake to have sidelined his physical recovery, but physical exercise had been difficult within their quarters and the decision was long past at this point. Whatever Fovery had done to motivate the group to join him on this little jaunt did not matter to him, especially in comparison to the mental magic that had already been worked upon him.

Mages who traveled to that era might find that magic is impeded or works differently,​ or perhaps that the total sum of available power is greatly reduced. One or two mages might find enough power to operate, but more than that might deplete the mystic resources available. I do not know if these risks are fully understood or measurable."​

I suspect the price for Brundash would be high, but for over a hundred cycles Brundash has already paid the ultimate price in the end anyway."​

"My initial thought is my companions and I should seek out one or more pieces of the Zioth, as they are as vital to the cycle as the Voice and perhaps something that could be brought under control. The pieces might be well and truly lost during our time, but potentially attainable here before they are collected, allocated and used by the surviving faiths of the realms. Whether pulling one or more through the time-stream would upset proper course of events I cannot know, but it seems like it may be worth the risk. If it fails, well, the next cycle will fix our error, as will the next thousand after that. The piece of time might be of great import, as it could perhaps provide a clearer avenue for a path back to the Zioth. Those are my thoughts."​

He wondered of Halaren'​s prayer based magic, and how it compared to his own. Andritha was strong in Arnell'​s mind, and he had no doubt the magic he was able to bestow was a god-given gift, but how was that different in different people. He wondered how much all of this was political, power based. But then he also thought understood a little more -- as even in his hometown, those with and without magic were different types of people. Some people did not understand, some thought they understood, but did not. Myth, legend, smokescreens and argument were not unknown. Magi, wizards, whatever you called them, did not usually advertise their arts widely. Some towns, Arnell had learned, were more accepting of magic than others, and perhaps due to what locals called 'The Monastery',​ in Stein the magic was broadly accepted. Rangers, who had their ways of speaking to nature, were common in the town, as it was on the frontiers of the southern mountains.

It was in one way liberating to be in a town where he could assume everyone he met was a mage, rather than assuming everyone was not. It was accepted, broad, and wide there. In that sense, Arnell never wanted to leave and yearned to be accepted more than he was. He had not yet really explored why some of the wizards seemed to think he had not earned his stripes suitably to be invited in. In that, he was confused: he had joined a brotherhood,​ for life, for ever, yet when in the home of the brotherhood,​ he was not welcomed with open arms -- kind of the contrary.

But you may be able to find the answers yourself. You know why I took you out of Brundash, but you might still wonder why I brought you here, a place far from Malaener and Yunim and every other place you've known. I brought you here because one of Corbyn'​s memories made me recall an old legend about this place. There'​s a cave here which the locals believe is haunted or something along those lines. They use it for a kind of rite of passage. Supposedly, one of them once explored deep into the caverns and described a creature'​s skull formed from bone and copper. He didn't take it because their superstition forbids it. Corbyn, one of the connections you made, which I was forced to suppress, was that the Piece of Mind -- huh. Now that I say it out loud... Let's call it the Mind Piece of the Zioth. In any case, you recalled a link between the word Mind and the phrase, 'a skull healed with metal.'​ This may be the Piece given to the Polinakas."​

When Fovery admitted to bringing them to where a physical piece of the Zioth lay, he gasped, looking around him with wide eyes. "If the Zioth of Time threw us out of our world, the Zioth of Mind will surely do something equally disastrous!"​ He pushed Lodestone into Guillaume'​s hand and rushed forward to Fovery. "Do the others know about the skull healed with metal? Are they coming here?"

"I mean it is just a guess the House has the piece of time. I assumed it would help them build something as potent as the chamber. Maybe they succeeded without it. But I am not so sure it was disaster. If we had not moved from one era to another we might not have learned the Zioth was a circle of time doomed to fade away unless broken. Whether good or ill stems from our efforts is not yet certain, but we have hope for a better tomorrow at least."​

Andritha has blessed those who live in the world, and the Zioth was simply the world in which they lived, wrapped up in the love of the Mother. Ending the Zioth felt to him like falling from the cradle into infinity. But what was this alternative?​

"The Zioth repeats itself, like a circle or loop, forever returning toward the beginning. Except I realize now it may not be forever. The Zioth is based on the positions of the moons in the sky. I had previously assumed the orbits were constant, that each turn of the Zioth lasted exactly the same amount of time. What I recently realized, what the ritual helped make clear to me, is this is not exactly the case. As Mr. Malethorpei of the seers indicated in his prediction, there is a variation every in the 45th and 91st cycles. This means that, over a great deal of time, the Zioth will decrease."​ He squeezed the circular branch, shrinking it a fraction. "The effect might appear small at first, but the cycle may be repeated an untold number of times - we ourselves have traveled over 100 cycles - and that difference can add up over eons. If the length of the Zioth continues to shrink over time..."​ Corbyn squeezed the branch, making the circle smaller and smaller until it finally couldn'​t take the strain and broke.

"I have always had a keen interest in archaic rites of passage and related myths, so I admit the prospect of visiting this cavern has piqued my interest. I would visit it if I can rely on the rest of you to accompany me."

I fear reaching that conclusion does not require any great divination skill. I think I favor returning with some of the pieces if we can manage it, for that would seem to present more options than returning with none."

I ask because it is one of the oldest bits of lore I have found and I wonder if it may actually relate to the '​before'​ era, prior to the beginning of the cycle and I had thought about investigating what may have been left behind at some point."​

I am afraid if that I were not so dedicated to my readings I might not have proved nearly as much use, and I cannot help but being true to my curious nature. If there were perchance a book or two related to the magical lore of the Zioth or the cycles of the moon that would not be missed, I can always make use of reading materials."​

 +"Well it is late, and we have much to do here in Gaping tomorrow. If you will give me a few minutes, I will set up our accommodations."​ Fovery scanned the area until he found a few thorny sticks among the brush. He gathered them into a small pile, and then kneeled on the ground. He picked up the first one, recited an incantation,​ and placed it back down, where it rooted itself firmly in place. The next, he placed at the end of the first, nearly perpendicular to the ground. It lengthened, and, when he let go, remained balanced at an improbable angle. When he placed the third, forming a shoulder-high triangle, the thorns of each reached towards each other and intertwined,​ until the triangle was fully solid. He continued, creating three more triangles, until he had a tent. Corbyn watched in fascination as Fovery constructed this dwelling for the evening using his art, watching the careful geometric work that went into constructing the exterior. ​
 +Fovery stood, rubbed the dirt off his hands, and with an elaborate gesture, motioned the party inside what would no doubt be extremely cramped quarters.
 +When Corbyn, naturally the first, entered, he found that not to be the case at all. There was more room inside the magical structure than outside, and enough comfortable-looking mats were already laid out for each of them. Also inside were a washbasin, a barrel of drinking water, mugs, bowls, utensils and a wicker basket full of fruit and nuts. Corbyn treated himself to a handful of nuts, delighting in the opportunity to try out the freshly conjured foodstuffs. He grabbed a mat and started to unroll it, before a more interesting thought crossed his mind. He unhooked the whip from his belt and unfurled it partway, stopping at a black mark some distance past the handle. He took the straightened length of the whip and compared it to the rolled up sleeping map, reaching some conclusion in his head. He then proceeded to walk along the "​wall"​ of the structure, turning the mat from end to end. When he was done he laid out the mat and sat down, jotting down a quick note in a small book he pulled from his pouch.
 +Voss had followed him in and the large man gingerly stretched out his long arms toward the ceiling, finding no resistance. Seeing that Corbyn was already eating, he pulled out an apple for himself and gave it a tentative taste. Finding it palatable, he finished it off in three large bites before disposing of the core in a bowl. Meat would have been better, but he had been in enough rides and campaigns where food had run short too appreciate any sort of fare that was not rotten or worm-ridden. The mugs were solid, but there was not but water in the barrels. He wondered if ale took more magic than water.
 +Corbyn looked on as Halaren and the others settled in. "​Perceptor,​ perhaps you might lead Mr. Guillaume in a short prayer this evening?"​
 +"But of course,"​ Halaren answered while chewing.
 +Corbyn looked at Gil. "I can, if you are interested, Mr. Guillaume aid the Perceptor in teaching you a simple prayer or two in Sarnam, the language of Andritha."​
 +Gil appreciated the attention to his education of Andritha, and Halaren was happy to be able to speak in Sarnam, a language that he had been polishing since they arrived in this time. It also seemed like he was trying to see if Corbyn knew anything he did not.
 +The scholar also kept an eye on the High Mage, for another thought had crept into his mind. Fovery had said there was much to do in Gaping, and it occurred to him that it might be worthwhile to inquire about where in the world this place lay, but the opportunity never came up.
 +Halaren had no trouble with food appearing from nowhere. He ate it all the time in this new world. It was possibly his favorite magic trick out of all the things he had seen so far. As he filled a mug and bowl for himself, he wondered at the interior of the magical structure, thinking it must be like Zilgard'​s sword. The historic blade sat unused, in dagger form. Halaren had managed to work it into the perfect size to fit into his sheath, so it no longer clattered around. He hadn't transformed it since they entered Brundash.
 +Before night fell, the priest made sure everyone was together, and for the first time, delivered a sermon entirely in the holy tongue. Though very proud of his accomplishment,​ Voss felt like more of an outsider than ever.
