The Coming of the Zioth

Jahred Voss

Voss has an intensely pale complexion, even for a very light-skinned caucasian, which has earned him the nickname 'The Ghoul.' Lately though, this creamy skin has given away to being pocked with red blotches, the end result of a stubborn epidermis that refuses to tan. The Vhoosch are rarely exposed to the beating sun and it's heat and warmth. Like his ancestors before him, he has a hard time adjusting to more mild and warm climates. He is extremely sensitive to humidity… it is not out of place to see him sweating, even when in a relaxed setting.

He stands at 6'4” tall and weighs just a stone or two short of three hundred pounds. Jehrad certainly stands out wherever he makes his presence felt. Big bones, canon ball sized shoulders and a cobra-like developed trapezius only add to his overall marked appearance. His appendages are just as massive. Thick muscular arms complete with fat sausage fingers sprout out of large, veiny bear-sized hands.

Jehrad keeps his head and face clean-shaven. His once long raven locks and deep beard have been put aside as relics from a past that he tries everyday to forget. He is new more careful about his personal grooming, to please his new Rangplugin-autotooltip__default plugin-autotooltip_bigThe Kingdom of Rang

entourage if for nothing else.

Voss would be considered ruggedly handsome in an intense, primal short of way. His looks have been further matted somewhat by a crooked nose (due to being broken on more than one occasion) and a knicked right ear that is missing about the first 3 inches. He also sports another 5 inch scar just above his right eye, which clips the center of his eyebrow. Cold, ice-grey orbs are what make up his eyes.

His entire body is covered with several Vhoosch scarification designs (most are not visible when in full dress), along with several unintended ones received from a variety of dangerous situations.

A very intricate white hot scarification design lay implanted along his entire right forearm. It is the depiction of a kneeling nude woman with her hands thrown to the air in an act of anguish or despair. Some Vhoosch words also surround the depiction in a spiral-like pattern. Another curious scarification is also easily visible upon the left side of his neck… it is the image of a small key and opening door, with an out stretched hand beckoning as if for someone to enter the door (unknown to most in Rangplugin-autotooltip__default plugin-autotooltip_bigThe Kingdom of Rang

(revised history - Ted Hessing)

He came into this world the fourth and final son, and the tenth child overall of his family. Being of the warrior caste, the boys were predestined to be foot soldiers for the tribe and their daughters to be married off. As all boys of the tribe, he spent most of his early childhood training for his coming profession.

Violent ends were not uncommon to his people. He had already lost an older brother to a battle with the Eastern Kingdomsplugin-autotooltip__default plugin-autotooltip_bigThe Eastern Kingdoms

Little is known about the Eastern Kingdoms. At one time, there was regular communication with Rang, but the kingdoms have become increasingly quiet over time.

Physically, the Eastern Kingdoms are nearly inaccessible from Rang. Their borders with the Ice Sea are treacherous due to rocks and ice, so there are very few ports. The border with
and a sister to the wrath of her betrothed before he had seen 12 summers. He grieved for them not, for like all of his people he believed the Council and the Guardian would judge them justly. Instead he redoubled his efforts to one day join his fallen brothers amongst the Glorious Dead at the Hall of Heroes. His uncommon size and strength made it possible for him to join the warriors at a very young age. His coming of age ritual granting him the right to join his father and brother on their raids and have his voice heard in tribal matters was the proudest day of his life.

His father brought pride to the tribe and his ancestors through daring warfare. Soon, their family's honors were not easily counted. The time they managed to capture a young Eastern prince in the middle of his own marriage ceremony is still sung around campfires to this day.

His father seemed destined for the Hall of Heroes when his time on the steppes was at an end. After successfully leading an inferior-in-numbers, superior-in-ferocity force of only forty warriors against a sizeable military fort and town, his father’s legend grew.

The year after that, they orchestrated the capture of an Eastern general and his entire entourage whilst they were on a hunting expedition. The ransom gained through the kidnapping of that general and prince alone ensured a long comfortable living for the tribe and whispered calls began for his father to lead more than raiding parties.

Unknown to his family, jealousy was brewing inside the current tribal leadership. The current Tribe Father and Mother were beginning to eye his family suspiciously… expecting them to eventually seize control of the tribe. It didn't help that they were immensely popular with the other warriors either. Father decided that it was time to do away with this threat.

Each Voosch warrior has the option to petition the tribe for the seat of Father. The Warriors and Shaman collectively decide on who is best suited to lead. If deposed in this fashion, many former Fathers leave the tribe never to return, although the option remains for them to stay. While the Father always has the option to keep his seat by defeating a challenger in ceremonial mortal combat, it would be a taboo of the highest order (akin to infanticide) for the patriarch to pre-emptively dispose of a rival. Indeed, it is considered part of the Father’s duties to ensure that the tribe will always have strong and capable leadership.

The tribe Father had grown selfish in his years and led them to believe that he had found a town that had not paid the proper respect to the tribe. His son confirmed this. The town had no respect for the tribe, the son told them, and repeated several of the insults that had been hurled their way. Fortunately, the son had received information that the town had moved their treasure stores within a grain mill in case the tribe did come in force against them. A clever plan - but not clever enough to fool the tribe! Who in the tribe could be counted on to restore their honor?

He, his father and brothers were named by the Tribe Father to go and secure these hidden riches for the Tribe. 'What an honor,' they thought! Little did they know it was an ambush! The town's defenses had already been alerted to their arrival. The warriors had no problems entering the mill, only to be barricaded inside by the hundred or more townspeople and militia. The grain mill was then set afire. Faced with the choice of burning alive or fighting, he, his father & kin jumping out of the mill to escape the fire only to be cut down by arrows and crossbow bolts.

He must have hit his head on a rock upon landing and lost consciousness. The ambushers left him for dead. When he awoke to voices, his family certainly was. The first sight that greeted his eyes was that of the Tribe Father's son. At first he thought he would be saved. But wait! The son was in league with the ambushers - and they were now decapitating his kin! Confusion and despair gave way to rage and he flew at the men.

Alas, righteous fury was not enough to ensure victory. While we was able to catch them off guard, their superior skill held the day. Eventually he was exhausted and defeated. They didn't even need to restrain him - wounds had sapped his strength. He could not even lift his sword.

Near delerium, he promised revenge in this life and cursed them all to their fate as Unquiet Dead. The Tribal Father's son laughed dismissively. Revenge he would not have. The son would tell the story of how his kin had valiantly fought but ultimately succumbed. The son, however, would spin a tale about himself dealing such a blow against the town that it would be sung of for generations. The treasure he returned with was given by the town as a gift to secure further raids but also corroborated the Tribal Father's original story.

(The town thought they got a great deal with a Tribal Father: kill some Voosch raiders, lose a grain mill, and pay some coins was a cheap price to pay for peace. Voosch raiders were not typically bought so cheaply.)

The Son declared that Voss wasn't even worth the trouble of killing and instead took a piece of his ear to claim as a prize before leaving. Such mutilation was considered incredible dishonour amongst the Voosh - it signalled capitulation in battle and the voluntary enslavement. It was the act of coward to prefer a life of servitude above glorious death in battle. And it would seem the Voss would have chosen that dishonourable path.

Gravely wounded he fell into a sleep there amongst the mud, filth, and blood of his kin. However, the Guardian would not judge him yet, and he did not die. He awoke feverish and feeble an unknown amount of time later. Physically he was barely alive but his psyche was much worse.

When he awoke he wasn't even sure he wanted to be alive. He set about collecting the bodies of the fallen for a funeral pyre. While saying the ceremonial funeral words as best as he could, Voss, a giant amongst his people and a promising young warrior, began to sob. He could not return to his tribe - even his sisters and their husbands would be sure to disown him. Other tribes would see his clipped ear and figure him for a coward and runaway slave. He could not hope to stay with the townspeople - Voosch were despised in this land.

Completely disowned by his tribe, and with nowhere else to go, he decided to head as far west as possible. The sun dipped behind the Dragonplugin-autotooltip__default plugin-autotooltip_bigDragons

There is a wide variety of stories about dragons. Some tell of majestic and benevolant beings who are willingly given tribute. Others tell of horrible, mindless creatures who think of nothing but destruction. Dragons in myth range in size from smaller than a blade of grass, to larger than Aerv itself.
Back mountains. The Warrior (moon) had travelled the sky and was now visible in the western sky. He had heard stories of lands beyond the mountains, but the range itself was cursed long ago. No one, even the most fearsome warriors, ever dared its peaks. Horses wouldn't be led through them. They were said to be acursed. Such a forboding place, but then again was not he cursed as well? If he should die, so be it. He would get another chance to earn his way to rejoin his ancestors and the other Glorius Dead in the Hall of Heroes after the coming of the Zioth.

He gathered what he could - a dagger, a sword, a horse - and struck out. He stayed to the edge of the wild - evading both Voosch and Easterners. Only venturing towards the settlements of Easterners when his resources faltered and he could not supply himself in the wild. The trek westwards through the mountains practically killed him. Although he was able to convince his mount to enter the mountains, it wasn't long before he slaughtered it.

half insane, emaciated and dying of thirst. Fortunately he was discovered by a hunting party in the retinue of the Duke of Ostmark. Two bull mastiffs had come upon his collapsed figure while in search of boars. The knights were immediately fascinated by this foreigner. They returned to the local castle, intent on showing their find to the Duke himself. The man's foreign language, ornately scarred body and large physique got the attention of the entire castle.

At first an object of curiosity for the court, it was not long before he found himself in full employ as a man of arms and soldier for the Ostmark Duke. The knights readily accepted him as a candidate for training as a soldier and were impressed that the big foreigner already knew quite more than your typical young man. His fearsome appearance alone had more effect that an entire line of cavalry.

His language was wholly unintelligible to the court and their language to him. The knights eventually named him 'Voss' - as that sounded similar in their tongue to Voorsch. When Voss learned their language he never corrected them. This was a new life. He'd have to earn his name back.

He made a name for himself with his prowess, viciousness and short-fused temper. He was a significant assed to the Duke in quashing of two sizeable tax rebellions.

The system of taxation being entirely alien was interpreted as members of the Duke's tribe being unwilling to share for the good of that tribe. To Voss, the Duke seemed a good 'Father'. The Duke required sharing in order to provide for the common defense. For Voorsch tribesmen that handled food and fodder not to share with the warriors was an insult unheard of and he viewed this matter the same way and lead the charge. The resistance never stood a chance and was brought down.

Later, when high Andrithian priests visited, the Duke provided food, shelter and was required to tithe. Voss had to have this custom explained to him several times. He could never understand what benefit these richly clothed men brought to the Duke's tribe. In his eyes, Voss had facilitated taxes from the Duke's people to go into the pockets of the clergy. The true thorn in his side was the observation that the more the clergy professed to be looking after all of the Duke's people, the more money they asked for. The more opulent the clergymen's lifestyles seemed the more (in Voss' eyes) they were taking from the common pool. The more they took, the less they actually gave back to the tribe.

Voss would never understand customs such as these and over time he felt less able to be a part of it all. His years pass long stretched of boredome punctuated with brief periods of intense action During times of peace, there was very little to do for a man at arms. He didn't fare well during the down times. He needed a way to redeem his honor and to work his way into being worthy of the Honored Dead. Opportunities his station as a peacetime soldier did not afford.

He asked to be dismissed from service, and this request was granted by his superior (a country Knight of Ostmark). He was given the pay and an honorable discharge from the Duke's service. He set out westwards working as security in the employ of a Spice Merchant, intent on discovering the rest of this new land.

(Old history by Christopher) Jehrad came into this world the fourth and final son, and the tenth child overall of the Voss family. The Voss family was of the warrior caste, their boys destined to be foot soldiers for the Jaluxy tribe and their daughters to be married off. As all boys of Jaluxy, Jehrad spent most of his early childhood training for his coming profession. He was also placed as apart of the 'Deruxxi' (quasi- engineers) who excel at mounting and dismantling the multi-faceted tent cities of the tribe wherever they decided to set up shop for the time being. It didn't help that they were immensely popular with the other warriors either. Father Paimannx decided that it was time to do away with the Voss patriarch and his upstart boys. He dispatched the Voss men on a fool's errand. He had them believe that he had received information on the whereabouts of a local Eastern kingdom treasury that was stashed away hidden within a grain mill. The Voss men headed off thinking they were on their way to an easy score. Little did they know, the town's sheriff and people had already been alerted to the arrival of this Vhoosch band. The Voss warriors had no problems entering the mill, only to be barricaded inside by the hundred or more town's people and militia. The grain mill was then set afire. Jehrad managed to escape by jumping onto an adjacent hamlet. He then retreated into the night, heading back into the wilderness. Before Jehrad returned to the Jaluxy tribe settlement, he was met halfway by a close friend of another warrior caste family. He warned Jehrad that Father Paimannx was behind the entire affair and would murder him if he returned to camp. This friend gave Jehrad a care package that would see him off for a few weeks in the wilds. He suggested that Jehrad find another tribe to adopt him, because his days with the Jaluxy were finished. Jehrad demanded to know if this friend had prior knowledge of the affair. The response he received was hesitant and suspicious. In a fit of rage, Voss attacked the man, overpowered him and hacked him to pieces. He then gave the man's remains the most cruel treatment known to the Vhoosch… he let the crows eat them. With his body seperated and dispersed, his soul would not find it's way to the other side. Jehrad then decided to return to the village where the trap was sprung, intent on murdering the most people possible until he was eventually cut down. However, the closer he came to the village, the more and more his thirst for vengeance dissipated. Instead he was left with a cold, empty feeling. His eyes lingered on the nearby town's people…farmers just starting to work their grounds… his grip rock hard on his sword hilt. The desire to wreak havoc had left him. Personality

To outsiders, Voss is a bit of a social recluse. Living a hermit-like existence, the man appears to prefer his own company. He often presents a tight-lipped, steely front when confronting strangers. Although easily tagged the 'strong and silent type', underneath his rough exterior lay a dry wit and a surprisingly well developed sense of humour. Unfortunately, only those close enough to him get the opportunity to sample this hidden side of his character. And while the man has few friends, he is fiercely loyal to those he possesses. Those he befriends, will find in him a devoted comrade who will follow them straight into the gates of hell if the need should arise.

Respect, loyalty and honour are the three elements which govern his actions. While fully capable of being vicious and violent, Voss will never break his word, betray his sire or do anything that would be deemed beneath a warrior. Of course, as most men of violence, Voss can be flexible on that concept. Murdering women, men and children while following orders or if they are in the way of a goal can be easily justified in his brain. With the case of the Ostmark famine rebellions, Voss believes that those people should of known their place beneath the royalty. As such, they signed their own death warrants.

However, Voss will not prey on the weak just for sport. While a self-confessed crude man, Jehrad nonetheless prefers a suitable challenge when it comes to combat. Ripping a man's life away certainly brings a tug to his loins and a faster tick in his heart. He lives for the thrill of war, and is always on the look out for better ways to test himself in that area.

His belief in loyalty was seriously shaken by his break from tribe Jaluxy, but his new found role here in Rangplugin-autotooltip__default plugin-autotooltip_bigThe Kingdom of Rang
